MacWhisper wins the local-privacy round
By default, MacWhisper downloads a Whisper or Parakeet model and runs transcription on the Mac. Its documentation says transcription data, including speaker identification, does not leave the device. Once the model is installed, local transcription can work without an internet connection.
That is stronger than a cloud service promising careful handling. Atter AI is not an on-device transcription tool; audio is processed through its managed service. For legal interviews, unreleased research or sensitive client calls where upload is prohibited, MacWhisper is the more defensible choice.
There is an important footnote. MacWhisper stops being fully local when you select a cloud transcription provider, use DeepL translation, or send a transcript to an external AI service. Local Ollama or LM Studio can keep AI prompts on the Mac, but that requires more setup. “MacWhisper is private” is true only if the user chooses the local path.
MacWhisper is a serious file-transcription workbench
MacWhisper handles audio and video files, microphone recording, app audio, YouTube links, podcasts and batch queues. It exports TXT, SRT and VTT, includes a subtitle video player, and can monitor a folder so new files are transcribed automatically. Pro users can control it with the mw command-line tool and connect outputs to Notion, Zapier, Obsidian, n8n, Make or a webhook.
That feature set is ideal for a podcaster with twelve episodes waiting in a folder, or a journalist who needs searchable interviews and subtitle files. Atter AI is deliberately less technical. Its advantage is not export depth; it is turning one recording into something readable and actionable with little configuration.
Models, hardware and speed
Local control comes with local costs. Larger Whisper models need more memory and take longer to run. MacWhisper’s own support page warns that Intel Macs lack dedicated machine-learning hardware and can be substantially slower; Apple silicon Macs are the better home for local models.
MacWhisper also offers cloud providers when local processing is too slow. That solves the performance problem by giving up the central privacy benefit for that job.
Atter AI hides model selection and hardware tuning. Upload a recording and wait for the result. That is less flexible, but it avoids questions such as WhisperKit versus Parakeet, model size, GPU compatibility and local disk usage.
Languages and accuracy
MacWhisper lists 100 supported languages. Atter AI supports more than 90. On coverage alone, MacWhisper has the edge.
Accuracy is more complicated. MacWhisper lets you choose among model families and sizes, so quality changes with the selected model and Mac. Atter AI’s 98.7% verified figure applies to clean audio. Neither number predicts a noisy bilingual interview with overlapping speakers.

Speakers, summaries and AI features
MacWhisper can recognize speakers with compatible WhisperKit models and selected cloud services, but the feature is not universal and does not apply to dictation. Meetings and mobile use
The direct-download MacWhisper can detect meetings and record audio from Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype, Chime, Discord and other Mac apps. It also provides system-wide dictation. Those features make it far more than a drag-and-drop converter.
There is an iPhone and iPad version, but it is distributed separately as Whisper Transcription. Current documentation says local iPhone models require supported recent hardware, while cloud transcription and AI assistance have separate terms. A MacWhisper license is not a single cross-device membership.

Free and paid boundaries
MacWhisper offers a free version, while the direct-download Pro edition uses a one-time lifetime license. The App Store and iOS versions follow different purchase rules, and cloud Assistant features can require an optional subscription or the user’s own API keys. Exact amounts change, so this article does not freeze a price that may be wrong next month.
