Fathom is meeting-first. It records Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, then delivers a transcript, a clean summary, searchable moments and shareable clips. Its individual free plan is unusually generous. Atter AI is recording-first. Meetings are one input alongside uploaded audio, links and mobile recordings; the output extends to decisions, action items and a mind map.

Choose Fathom when almost everything happens in scheduled video calls and you want a capable product without a recurring bill. Unlimited recordings, storage and transcripts on the individual Free plan are a real advantage, not a tiny demo allowance.
Choose Atter AI when your work spills beyond live calls: an interview saved on your phone, a lecture file, a link, an Apple Watch recording, or a meeting that changes languages. It transcribes more than 90 languages and turns the result into a summary, key decisions, action items with owners and a mind map.

Fathom’s strongest argument is still “free and easy”
As of July 2026, Fathom’s Free plan includes unlimited meeting recordings, unlimited storage and unlimited transcription in 38 languages. It also produces instant standard summaries, lets you search calls, and creates clips and playlists. That is enough for many consultants, founders and individual contributors.
There are boundaries. The free tier provides only a limited number of advanced summaries each month; AI-generated action items, follow-up emails, custom summaries and Ask Fathom sit in Premium. But the core recording product does not collapse after a few meetings.
Fathom is also expanding beyond the visible meeting bot. Its Mac bot-free capture is in beta, and the product supports either bot or bot-free recording where available. For people who dislike an extra participant tile, that matters.
Atter AI cannot honestly beat “unlimited and free” for a solo user whose entire week is Zoom. If that describes you, start with Fathom.
Atter AI handles more kinds of audio
Fathom assumes there is a meeting and that you are present. Its help center says the notetaker can record Zoom, Teams or Meet only when the user is also on the call, and it can capture only one meeting at a time.
Atter AI is less tied to the calendar. You can record on mobile, upload an existing audio file, import from a link or capture a live meeting. There is no monthly transcription quota; each uploaded file can be up to five hours or 2GB. On clean audio, its verified accuracy is 98.7%.

Fathom’s output is polished for meetings. It offers chronological and enhanced summaries, clips, playlists, search and integrations with Slack, Salesforce, HubSpot, Notion, Asana and more. Paid team plans add global search, comments, folders, keyword alerts, CRM field sync and coaching metrics.
Atter AI stays closer to the recording itself. Speaker labels, summary, decisions, action items, mind map and a Q&A assistant form a compact package. It is a better fit when you want the record organized but do not need to operate a sales or customer-success system around it.
Privacy and consent
Fathom publishes SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and GDPR compliance. Its help center says data is stored in the United States; its AI subprocessors are contractually barred from training on user data, while de-identified data may improve Fathom’s proprietary models unless the user opts out.
Fathom also makes recording visible and offers consent notifications. That is good practice, but every user still needs to follow local law and company policy. The same applies to Atter AI: tell participants before recording.
